Additive: Superplasticizer Gel with Waterproofing and Retarding Properties

Description of Retarder Microsilica Gel

What is Retarder Microsilica Gel?

Retarder Microsilica Gel is a well-established product based on carboxylate-based superplasticizers, silica fume, fillers, and retarders for concrete. This product increases the slump of concrete due to its powerful superplasticizer made from polycarboxylate ether, significantly reducing the water-to-cement ratio, thus enhancing the compressive strength of the concrete. It is added during the mixing process to improve the rheological properties of fresh concrete and develop the hardened concrete’s characteristics. The gel compacts the concrete matrix and fills voids between aggregates, reducing the permeability of hardened concrete. Furthermore, the retarding agents in the formulation delay the setting time, slowing down the hydration reaction rate. Additionally, this product can reduce the cement content by about 10 to 15%.

When added to concrete, this additive significantly improves the concrete’s strength, durability, and impermeability. It can also reduce permeability and enhance chemical resistance, protecting against sulfates.

Mechanism of Action of Retarder Microsilica Gel

How does Retarder Microsilica Gel improve concrete quality?

The silica fume in the formulation acts as a powerful pozzolanic material that can replace a portion of cement, exhibiting similar performance. Upon reacting with water and calcium hydroxide, silica fume produces calcium silicate hydrate, which helps in the hardening of concrete and increases its strength. Additionally, the polycarboxylate ether present in the gel forms a layer on the cement particles. This creates a spatial repulsion due to the thick layer, preventing the cement particles from clumping together. The polymer’s charged particles create a repulsive force, which further enhances the workability of the mix. The polypropylene fibers in the gel also contribute to improving the mechanical and abrasive properties of the concrete. Furthermore, the retarding agents in the formulation offer better control over the setting time.

Properties and Effects of Retarder Microsilica Gel

What properties and effects does Retarder Microsilica Gel have on concrete?

  • Increased stability and durability of the concrete.
  • Reduced water-to-cement ratio.
  • Enhanced abrasion resistance of concrete.
  • Increased workability and slump.
  • Retarder setting time for better control over curing.
  • Reduction in cement consumption by approximately 10 to 15%.
  • Prevention of surface cracks due to thermal stresses.

Applications of Retarder Microsilica Gel

What are the main applications of Retarder Microsilica Gel?

  • Concrete pouring in areas exposed to harmful chemical ions.
  • Suitable for high-volume concrete placements.
  • Adaptable for concrete casting in hot climates and regions.
  • Ideal for producing high-strength and durable concrete.
  • Suitable for concrete exposed to abrasion (e.g., floors and pavements).
  • Facilitates long-distance transportation of concrete.
  • Appropriate for making impermeable concrete.
  • Ideal for construction projects subject to freeze-thaw cycles.
  • Used in water structures such as canals, pools, and reservoirs.

  • State: Thick slurry
  • Color: Dark gray
  • Specific Gravity: 1.30 to 1.35 g/cm³
  • Chloride Ion: None
  • pH: Approximately 8

Standards of Retarder Microsilica Gel

Which international standards does Retarder Microsilica Gel comply with?

  • ASTM C494 Type F
  • BS1881-122-8
  • EN12390

Consumption Rate of Retarder Microsilica Gel

What is the consumption rate of Retarder Microsilica Gel?

The amount of Retarder Microsilica Gel to be used is determined through laboratory studies based on environmental conditions and types of materials used. Generally, the consumption rate is between 5% to 7% of the weight of the cement used. It is important to reduce 10 to 15% of the water content in the mix before adding the gel to achieve high compressive strength and produce a robust concrete mix. The amount of the additive may affect the setting time, depending on the ambient conditions.

Application Method of Retarder Microsilica Gel

How should Retarder Microsilica Gel be used?

There are two main ways to add Retarder Microsilica Gel to concrete:

  1. Mix the gel with all or part of the mixing water and then add it to the dry materials. Mix thoroughly.
  2. Add the gel after all the other ingredients have been combined into the mix.

Note: Excessive use of the additive can extend the setting time too much and cause issues with concrete curing.

Important: Ensure that each cubic meter of concrete is mixed for at least one minute.

Safety of Retarder Microsilica Gel

What safety precautions should be observed while using Retarder Microsilica Gel?

  • The material is not toxic or harmful to the environment.
  • In case of ingestion, seek immediate medical attention.
  • If it comes in contact with skin or eyes, rinse thoroughly with clean water.
  • Use appropriate safety equipment such as gloves, goggles, and masks when handling chemical materials.
