Bentonite Swelling Waterstop

Bentonit WaterSeal – BWE 2030

Bentonite waterstop is a highly elastic sealing material based on sodium bentonite in a butyl rubber matrix, specifically designed to prevent water infiltration and leakage in construction joints and concrete cold joints. This waterstop expands upon contact with water, forming a barrier against water penetration through concrete joints. It is installed using adhesive or nails and embedded within the next concrete pour.

Bentonite waterstops serve as a suitable alternative to PVC waterstops in areas where conventional PVC systems have not been installed. However, they should only be used in construction joints and are not suitable for expansion or contraction joints. One of the key advantages of bentonite waterstops is their ability to be installed on uneven concrete surfaces, making them ideal for sealing potential cold joints.

Key Features and Benefits

  • Provides effective sealing for cold joints, protecting reinforcement bars
  • Fills voids and cavities within concrete structures
  • Suitable for use in heavily reinforced concrete sections
  • Can be applied on uneven concrete surfaces
  • Maintains original shape under high water pressure
  • Highly resistant to moisture, humidity, and repeated wet-dry cycles
  • Offers delayed swelling for controlled expansion
  • Delivers permanent, reliable performance
  • No need for overlapping or welding during installation
  • Highly flexible and adaptable to joint contours
  • Non-toxic and safe for contact with potable water

Applications

  • Waterproofing horizontal and vertical construction joints
  • Sealing irregular surfaces and potential cold joints
  • Waterproofing around pipes and replacing traditional flange seals
  • Sealing various construction joints and concrete pouring sections
  • Waterproofing dams, tunnels, pools, and water channels
  • Water-tightening water treatment plants and sewage facilities
  • Protecting foundations, buried structures, and semi-buried structures
  • Waterproofing shear walls and load-bearing walls

Technical Considerations

  • Avoid submerging the bentonite waterstop in water before concrete pouring.
  • Ensure a minimum 50 mm concrete cover over the waterstop.
  • The substrate must be dry during installation.
  • Not suitable for sealing joints in precast concrete elements.
  • Protect from heavy moisture and direct rain before concrete placement.
  • Bentonite waterstops may not expand sufficiently in saltwater environments.
  • Effective for water pressures up to 12 meters depth.
  • Minimize the time gap between installation and concrete pouring.
  • If a significant delay occurs between installation and pouring, cover the surface properly to prevent premature expansion.

Installation Instructions

  1. Surface Preparation:
    • Ensure the substrate is dry, clean, and free from dust, oil, and loose materials before installation.
  2. Fixing the Waterstop:
    • Apply special adhesive to secure the bentonite waterstop to the concrete surface.
    • For vertical or overhead applications, use steel nails for additional fixation.
  3. Joint Placement:
    • Align the edges of the waterstop strips tightly together without overlapping.
    • Press firmly to ensure a secure bond.
  4. Final Preparations:
    • Protect the installed waterstop from direct moisture and rain until concrete pouring.
