What is Solvent-Based Bituminous Emulsion Primer?

The protection of concrete sections that are in close proximity to soil is essential and unavoidable. The soil contains destructive chemical ions and sulfates that, without proper protection, may penetrate the structure and damage the concrete section. The best time to protect concrete from chemical agents is during the initial concrete application, as the concrete in its plastic state tends to lose water and may come into contact with areas that are water-absorbing. This can reduce the mixing water before it participates in the hydration process, causing shrinkage and volumetric contraction of the mix, which can lead to cracking or deep cracks in some cases. These cracks serve as the primary pathways for destructive chemical agents and sulfates to penetrate the concrete, resulting in rebar corrosion, and over time, severe structural damage. To address this problem and protect fresh concrete from environmental damage, as well as to prevent the loss of water from the surface, the Solvent-Based Bituminous Emulsion Primer is formulated with bitumen and modified resins.

This product is a single-component waterproofing solution that is diluted with hydrocarbon solvents and has good adhesion to steel, concrete, brick, asphalt, and other building materials. After drying, it is highly durable against moisture and water vapor penetration and provides a substantial insulation layer. When applied in two layers, it effectively waterproofs the surface. However, it is generally used as an undercoat for emulsified waterproofing applications. The product is known for its ease of application and speed.

How to Apply Solvent-Based Bituminous Emulsion Primer

  • Ensure the surface is free of dirt, dust, grease, or other contaminants.
  • Clean the surface using high-pressure water (water jet), sandblasting, or compressed air if needed.
  • Apply the emulsion primer using a spray, brush, or roller.
  • Apply the first layer, ensuring the entire surface is covered.
  • Apply the second layer 2 to 3 hours after the first layer has set, when it is still tacky.
